At least 64 individuals died in a security raid against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's past.

Fierce clashes commenced when about 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho reacted using armed resistance, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, officials said.

The International human rights organization said it was "horrified" by the police operation, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Mission Consequences

The informal settlements adjacent to Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

Government representatives said no less than 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Many residents were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community Response

Community members have compared the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the raid started.

Transport routes stay blocked in the entire neighborhood.

Gang Growth

The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.

Local law enforcement reported over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the mission, along with numerous weapons.

Operation Background

The joint operation by various security forces was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are believed to be affiliates of a group from the northern region who are currently hiding in the city.

Wider Perspective

Major law enforcement actions are not uncommon in Brazil ahead of significant global gatherings in the nation.

The United Nations climate conference the environmental summit is scheduled in the northern urban center in November.
